I have Hereditary Angioedema which causes edema or swelling when I have flares. Since, I already struggle with having excess swelling in my body I thought it would be a good idea to do everything I could to help reduce the inflammation that I have.  I already receive infusions twice a week which is so helpful in keeping my HAE flares under control.  It wasn’t until recently that I discovered that I could also help reduce inflammation in my body with what I ate.  I’m not talking about food helping treat my HAE flares.  I am however, talking about reducing the overall inflammation that I have.  Certain foods are known to help naturally reduce inflammation, while others are known to cause inflammation.

Here is a list of a few foods that are known to help reduce inflammation:

  • Blue berries
  • Leafy greens
  • Tuna
  • Olive oil
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Oranges
  • Almonds, and so many others.

Foods that are known to increase inflammation are:

  • Fried foods
  • Pop (soda)
  • Refined carbohydrates
  • Processed foods, etc.

I have always been a naturally/purposefully healthy eater, but I realized I could always improve to help my body feel the best it could.  I decided to greatly increase the amount of foods that naturally reduce inflammation while eliminating those that are known to cause inflammation.  I just wanted to do it to see if I noticed a difference with how I felt.  I removed anything with preservatives and additives. I made almost everything from scratch which is admittedly more work, but that way I knew what was in my food.  I tried to keep everything as natural as possible and removed anything processed from my diet.  I decided to remove wheat, gluten, and processed sugars from my diet as well.  I was amazed at the results I saw.  I didn’t even realize how swollen my face, hands, and stomach were until a few days into changing my diet. The swelling has dramatically gone down.  I never knew I was that swollen until I made these few simple changes. I’m hoping the longer I’m on it I’ll continue to see changes as well as feel better overall.
